How do I turn my grass back yard in to a rock garden?
I am looking to cover my grass with pea gravel and pavers, creating a LOW maintenance option to grass. How can I make sure the grass will not come back? I was thinking like some industrial strength plastic sheeting, then the gavel on top? Will that work or do I have to actually remove the grass in strips?
If you want to do this without chemicals.....you are heading in the right direction. By using CLEAR plastic over the lawn you can kill it.......but now what? You still have the same soil level plus a layer of dead grass. If you want to put gravel......at least 2-3 inches so it doesn't shift on you when you walk exposing the cover underneath, you'll have to drop the soil level. Otherwise you have to put a border around the area to contain the gravel.
Instead of heavy black plastic (don't use the clear, discard that reuse elsewhere) , see if you can locate professional grade landscape fabric. This allows water and oxygen into the soil but no weeds up. When you pave over with plastic, you increase the runoff potential in your yard, the rain/snow doesn't have anywhere to go, thus increase street flooding......plus rocks wash off plastic easily with heavy rains and a bit of slope.
The fabric is critical if there are nearby trees or shrubs that have been relying on the water in the lawn. Seal them off from their water and it's bye-bye plants.
Especially consider the fabric if you are using pavers. Pavers over plastic, not good. Tears, weeds pop up.
Now realize dust will still be able to blow onto your gravel whether with plastic or fabric. Weeds will start growing in the dust, on top of the plastic/fabric. It may take decades or just a year to two depending on the amount of stuff blowing around your neighborhood.
